The community came into existence in 1867 as a construction camp on the Houston and Texas Central Railroad and was a part of the northeastern corner of a land grant given to A.M. McMahon. The first store, cotton gin, and lumberyard were established by John and Thomas Royder of the Rock Prairie community.
